Shark attack in Southern California, Solana Beach
SOLANA BEACH, Calif.— A great white shark killed a 66-year-old swimmer with a single, giant bite across both legs that severed both main arteries Friday as the man trained with a group of triathletes.
Dave Martin, a retired veterinarian from Solana Beach, was attacked early in the morning at 7am while him and 8 others swam from Fletchers Cove to Tabeltops. Martin was taken to a lifeguard station for emergency treatment but was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a statement on the Solana Beach city Web site. His injuries crossed both thighs, San Diego County sheriff’s Sgt. Randy Webb said in a news release.
Scripps Institution of Oceanography shark expert Richard Rosenblatt says the shark was probably a great white between 12 and 17 feet long. The bite marks on the victim legs were 22 inches in diameter.

Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards Season Finishes Next Week
There’s just a week left in the annual event period for the Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards presented by Monster Energy and less than a month before the world’s surfing elite gather in Anaheim, California for the XXL Awards party. XXL Ride of the Year and Biggest Wave awards get most attention, however the core surfing community continues to support the traditional category of Paddle-In surfing. This year there is a vast array of potential contenders from all around the world, ranging from Ben Andrews and Nic Lamb at Maverick’s in Northern California to Greg Long, Mark Healey and Jamie MItchell at Todos Santos, Mexico to Kalani Chapman at Waimea Bay, Hawaii to wildcards like Felipe Barnales at Pico Alto, Peru or Reinaldo Ibarra at Punta Lobos, Chile.
“If you want respect you have to dig deep and prove that you can paddle into a big one on your own when it’s heavy,” said Ken “Skindog” Collins, last year’s XXL Ride of the Year champion and a master of all big wave mojo.
“Getting towed into a big wave when you don’t have the skills to paddle into one is cheating plain and simple,” said Collins. “It’s fraud. None of the top guys want to see it. You need to paddle in when it’s gnarly, take your lumps, THEN go tow into a few. Simple as that.”
Nominees will be announced March 21 in the Monster Paddle category and all other divisions including Billabong XXL Ride of the Year, Billabong XXL Biggest Wave powered by Honda, Monster Tube, Surfline Best performance and Billabong Girls Best Performance. Over $130,000 in cash and prizes will be at stake. The Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards ceremony will take place on April 11 at the Grove Theater in Anaheim, California, and while seating is limited to 2000 invitation-only VIPs, the entire show will be webcast on both BillabongXXL.com and EXPN.com. The event will also be presented as an hour-long TV special on ESPN2 airing on Thursday, May 29 at 9:30 P.M. on the West Coast (12:30 A.M. late-night in the East).
Legend Rabbit Bartholomew Fights To Restore Kirra
Surfing legend Wayne ‘Rabbit’ Bartholomew wants governments to fork up funds to restore the famous Kirra Point break to its former glory.
“Governments make parks, raceways and stadiums like Skilled Park, they make all these public amenities for sports but not for surfing,” said Mr Bartholomew. “We have 50,000 to 70,000 recreational surfers living on the Gold Coast and the industry pumps hundreds of millions of dollars into the economy every year. The Government needs to look at that and finally recognize that surfing is a recreational amenity and Kirra Point needs to be upgraded.”
Legend surfer Mr Bartholomew sits on the Kirra Point Committee and has been fighting to restore the Kirra point break for more than 10 years.
Bartholomew agrues that by dredging and pumping of the groyne has caused tremendous sand build up and rarely shows it’s face.
At a cost of $150,000, geo-textile bags would extend the end of the Kirra groyne to its pre-1996 length, but the city council says more details are needed on adverse affects.
Other ideas to bring back Kirra include a $4 million additional outlet farther to the west for pumped sand, said Mr Bartholomew.
The council has approached the Environmental Protection Authority and is now awaiting a response from the State Government about the outlet.
I actually got a chance to surf Kirra when it was good. I spent 2 years in Australia surfing the East Coast. Strickly Boarding is a leading provider in custom surf jewelry and surfer accessories.

The event has an 8-day waiting period to ensure the competing girls get to surf the best waves. Heather Clark wins the first prize of $10,000.Mozambique in New Zealand is a perfect right-hander located at Ponto Do Oro in Southern Mozambique. The wave proved to hold true and pumped off clean three to four-foot surf, with a light offshore wind adding to the good conditions.
